Eat. Learn. Play. is transforming the school experience for a generation of Oakland students. We help to provide the resources kids need to reach their full potential, including access to nutritious food, high-dosage tutoring, and physical activity. We also transform school spaces to ensure kids have equitable access to dignified, joyful places to eat, learn, and play including schoolyards, cafeterias, libraries, and gyms.
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of People and Operations to lead our human resources and operational initiatives. This role serves as the key resource and representative of the Human Resources department, exercising leadership, subject matter expertise, and sound judgment in areas such as benefits, compliance, culture building, recruitment and onboarding, policy and procedure development. The Director of People and Operations is pivotal in fostering a positive workplace culture, driving employee engagement, and ensuring efficient and compliant operational processes. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in HR, operations management, and organizational development.
Responsibilities:
Leadership and Strategy
- Collaborate closely with senior leadership, including the CEO and CFAO, to identify HR and operational priorities and develop/implement a Human Resources strategy aligned with the organization’s goals to drive organizational effectiveness
- Offer advice and guidance to the senior leadership team on key Human Resources considerations
- Provide leadership and direction to the HR and operations teams
- Develop systems, structures and processes for all elements of the HR strategy
- Manage outsourced HR contractors, vendors, and functions
Talent Management and Teambuilding
- Develop and execute HR strategies that foster a productive and inclusive work environment, enhance employee engagement, and drive talent acquisition and retention.
- Champion and foster the organizational culture by supporting initiatives that promote collaboration, diversity, equity, and inclusion
- Lead and support managers in the recruitment process, including job description development, candidate sourcing, interviewing, and offer letters
- Grow and maintain the organization's professional developmentprogram, focusing on training specific to employee job duties and future growthopportunities
- Develop leadership programs to expand and build the skills of current and future leaders within the organization
- Design and support team building activities for staff at all levels
- Drive and refine a performance management process that encourages employee growth and effectively tracks performance feedback over time, while also developing, refining, rolling out, and preparing employees to use the system
Human Resources Compliance, Administration, and Benefits
- Ensure compliance with labor laws and regulations, including developing, implementing and refining administrative policies and procedures, including an employee handbook, that align with the goals of the organization and are compliant with local, state and federal laws and regulations
- Update and implement our total rewards program (compensation and benefits ) including health insurance and retirement plans in partnership with the CFAO
- Manage employee onboarding and ensure a smooth integration of new hires into the organization's culture and operations; manage the offboarding process
- Administer and assist employees with leaves of absence (e.g., PDL, PFL, CFRA), oversee workers’ compensation, unemployment, and disability claims
- Manage the HR and operations budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively
- Collect and analyze data to understand and drive HR decisions, assess workforce trends, and inform strategic planning across the organization
- Manage the maintenance of employee records, documentation, and required reports/filings
Employee Relations
- Serve as a point of contact for employee concerns and issues, maintaining an open-door policy
- Handle complex employee issues, providing guidance on conflict resolution and counseling, and maintaining a positive and respectful work environment
- Manage and enforce employee disciplinary issues and reporting
- Conduct investigations in response to employee complaints
- Provide guidance and support to managers on hiring, coaching, and terminations
Operational Excellence
- Support the CFAO in developing and implementing processes to enhance efficiency and productivity
- Support the C-suite in updating our decision-making framework regularly
- Supervise the Foundation’s office operations, including security systems, maintenance needs, and lease signing/renewal
- Manage IT and AV vendors for office and staff needs
- Work with insurance brokers to maintain proper business insurance coverage and ensure compliance
- Support ongoing inventory management in the office and warehouse as needed
Work Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or a related field; Master’s degree and PHR/SPHR certification preferred
- 7+ years of experience in HR and operations, preferably in an HR generalist capacity, with at least 3 years in a leadership role
- Experience supporting similarly sized organizations to develop and implement HR strategies that allow them to reach their goals. Strong knowledge of HR best practices, California labor laws and regulations, and operational management
- Proven track record of driving organizational change and improvement
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and leadership skills
- Adaptable with the ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced, growing, and dynamic environment

- Ability to think strategically and align HR initiatives with the broader business goals, anticipating future HR needs and proactively addressing challenges
- Strong people management skills leading through collaboration and shared accountability with high emotional intelligence and comfort with agile role definition
- Ability to engender trust, credibility, and confidence with employees at all levels, including senior leaders, and work well with external vendors
- Able to work sensitively and ethically with confidential information, work independently, and demonstrate good judgment and tact when handling difficult or sensitive situations
- Expertise in handling and resolving conflicts between employees, between employees and managers, or between different departments
- Strong technical knowledge and expertise in total rewards, performance management, labor law and compliance, and employee relations
- Excellent written and verbal communication
- Strong analytical skills, basic business intuition, and common sense. Able to view problems from a "big picture."
- Attentive to detail and follow through
Physical Requirements:
While performing the duties and responsibilities of this position, the incumbent is:
- Frequently required to sit for long periods of time; use a computer keyboard and mouse for sustained periods of time; and look at computer monitors for sustained periods of time
- Frequently required to stand, walk, bend, stoop, or kneel
- Occasionally required to reach with hands and arms
- Ability to lift, shift, and transport materials up to 10 pounds
Salary Range: $120,000 - $145,000
