Position Summary:
HDC seeks a Director of People Experience & Engagement to support our organization’s commitment to enhancing the employee experience at HDC. This position will play a critical role in our efforts in developing and retaining top talent while ensuring a positive and engaging employee experience. The ideal candidate will have a strong background creating and implementing strategies that enhance the overall employee journey.
Housed within the Human Resources team, the Director, People Experience & Engagement reports to the Vice President of Human Resources and Chief Diversity Officer. This role will support in designing, planning and implementing engagement and development programs, policies, and procedures in alignment with HDC’s organizational and DEI strategy.
Core focus areas of the Director, People Experience & Engagement will be:
- Developing an onboarding strategy for employees, interns, and fellows entering HDC.
- Coordination of events & engagement opportunities in partnership with the HR Team, President’s Office and DEI Council.
- Leading and developing HDC’s corporate training strategy, including compliance, elective, and leadership trainings.
- Leading HDC’s commitment to culture, engagement, and retention strategies through a DEI lens.

Salary Range: $110,000 - $120,000/Annual

People Experience:
- Develop and execute a comprehensive onboarding strategy that aligns with HDC’s mission, values, and goals.
- Design a strategy intended to engage existing staff in and across HDC teams.
- Collaborate with HR leadership to ensure the engagement strategy is reflected appropriately in HR & DEI practices, programs, and interactions.
- Foster a culture of engagement, inclusion, and continuous improvement throughout the employee life cycle by implementing initiatives to enhance satisfaction, retention, and overall well-being, including but not limited to quarterly engagement events and year-end events.
- Develop and manage employee surveys, focus groups, and other feedback mechanisms to gauge engagement and identify opportunities for improvement.
- Analyze data to identify trends and insights, and propose actionable recommendations to enhance the overall employee experience.
- Continuously evaluate and refine engagement initiatives to keep them relevant and impactful.
Career Planning and Performance Development:
- In collaboration with HR & Executive leadership and HDC’s Career Counselor, oversee and build succession planning and career pathing initiatives to ensure organizational readiness for future growth.
- Collaborate closely with key leaders and cross-functional partners to implement performance development initiatives and programs across lines of business.
- Ensure performance development processes are aligned with our talent priorities and integrated into HR technology, tools, and practices, including the HRIS and people support functions.
- Lead and develop HDC’s corporate training strategy, including compliance, elective, and leadership trainings to support employee growth and development.
Collaboration and Partnership:
- Work closely with colleagues in the HR and DEI team to implement holistic solutions that enhance the employee experience.
- Ensure a clear communication strategy is set for any talent or engagement programs managed.
- Provide coaching and support to leaders at all levels to ensure they are equipped to foster a positive employee experience.
- Partner with senior leadership to embed engagement and performance development principles into management practices.
DEI Strategy & Collaboration:
- Co-lead the DEI Council and bi-weekly DEI Council meetings, including membership, recruitment, management and education/training. HDC’s DEI Council Members collaborate to advise on, establish, and solidify HDC’s DEI mission, vision, and goals through related projects, events, trainings, and overall employee and partner engagement and support.
- Conduct research and remain proactive about learning new content and being on the forefront of DEI to improve self and organization’s development
- Encourage and support diversity through company culture, staff training, and workplace events and activities. Support the design and execution of creative ways to attract, retain, and promote diverse talent as well as develop and facilitate programs designed to foster a diverse workforce, cultivate inclusivity, and enhance employee engagement
- Performs other duties as required.
Required Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or other relevant field.
- 5-7 years of experience in human resources, employee engagement, talent management, or organizational development, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
- Proven experience in designing and executing employee engagement strategies and managing performance development processes.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills with the ability to influence and collaborate at all levels.
- Analytical mindset with the ability to interpret data and generate actionable insights.
- Ability to deliver complex projects on time and within budgetary guidelines.
- Strong group facilitation skills.
- Ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of a team.
- Ability to adapt to the needs of the organization and employees.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience leading or collaborating in workplace Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) centered activities and programs
- Fluency and knowledge to have conversations about DEI with people who are at different parts of the DEI journey
- Interest or experience in housing or real estate policy or government; familiarity with finance concepts/field/skill sets
- Bachelor’s degree in human resources, organizational leadership, or related field strongly preferred (comparable education or experience in affordable housing will also be considered)
