The Federation of Italian American Organizations of Brooklyn Ltd., also known as F.I.A.O. Brooklyn, is a 501C3 not-for-profit service umbrella organization located in Southern Brooklyn, New York.
Since 1977, FIAO Brooklyn has provided a gamut of free services to all in the community, successfully improving the quality of life for individuals and families, with a particular focus on immigrants, seniors, and youth. Today, FIAO Brooklyn employs 23 full-time and 425 part-time employees at its Community Center and in numerous public and private schools, providing social services, mental health services, counseling, legal assistance, educational after-school programs, multicultural community initiatives, and neighborhood improvement projects. These free services and programs are supported by New York City and New York State funding, as well as volunteers, private donations, and corporate grants. FIAO Brooklyn continues to empower thousands of community residents daily, enabling them to actively participate in a hub of opportunities for greater understanding and appreciation of each other's diversity, leading each to work collectively to enrich their own lives and the lives of all in the community.
Position Overview:
FIAO Brooklyn seeks a purpose-driven and results-oriented experienced leader with excellent managerial skills to serve in-person as Executive Director (ED)/Chief Executive Officer (CEO).
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the ED/CEO will be responsible for creating and executing FIAO's long-term development strategy, with a focus on expanded services and financial growth. As the primary communicator for FIAO, the ED/CEO is expected to establish strong relationships with members, employees, governmental and non-governmental agencies, public elected officials, private donors, and the community-at-large.
The ED/CEO will oversee the development and execution of a management plan to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of the organization. The management plan will include quality services, activities, standards, practices, program evaluation, and contractual alignment. The individual in this position will be responsible for the selection and performance of the organization's staff, services and programs, as well as the organization's budget, financial planning, and fundraising development.
Key Responsibilities:
Leadership & Governance
- Proactively updates the Board on FIAO's operations, the organization's publicly funded services and programs, Il Centro Community Center's privately sustained services and programs, and other factors influencing the organization's reputation.
- Identifies, evaluates, and communicates to the Board internal and external issues affecting the organization.
- Provides monthly reporting to the Board Committees of Management and Development, as well as during regularly scheduled meetings with the entire Board.
- Oversees the planning and coordination of Board and Committee meetings, guiding the establishment of meeting agendas.
- Reviews, assesses, and approves specific projects and plans that drive performance.
Planning & Management
- Supervises and manages the Executive Director of Funded Programs and the Director of the Community Center, who are responsible for the organization's efficient and effective day-to-day operations.
- Fosters transparent communication with public and private funders, as well as collaborating entities, to advance the organization's mission and foster a culture of trust.
- Leads and motivates staff, enhancing employee engagement to develop a high-performance managerial team.
- Oversees the planning, execution, and evaluation of services to ensure effectiveness.
- Ensures operations and programs align with the organization's mission and reflect board priorities.
- Serves as the primary media spokesperson, preserving the positive image of the organization.
- Maintains effective relationships with external government and community entities.
Human Resources Oversight
- Recommends and implements the organizational structure for FIAO staff, adhering to parameters set by the Board.
- Oversees job responsibilities and staff requirements for employees.
- Oversees recruitment, hiring, training, development, compensation, and termination of staff.
- Oversees the administration of a comprehensive human resources program, including position descriptions, performance standards, and performance appraisals.
- Responsible for the administrative policies and procedures governing the organization's functions.
Financial Planning and Fundraising Development
- Collaborates with the Development Committee of the Board to strategize, prioritize, and implement fundraising efforts.
- Ensures the organization has comprehensive and strategic fundraising plans to cultivate and engage both individual and institutional donors, whether private or public.
- Develops an annual operating budget in collaboration with the Executive Directors of Funded Programs and Centro Director, to ensure the organization's stability.
- Oversees all other financial matters, including operational and capital budgeting, to ensure that all activities are conducted with the highest ethical standards to guarantee accountability and legal compliance.
Qualifications:
- Bachelor's Degree required. Master's Degree preferred.
- Proven experience in a leadership role within a nonprofit organization or public/social sector.
- Minimum of 10 years of demonstrated success in organizational development and leadership.
- Strong strategic vision and the ability to lead organizational growth and development.
- Demonstrated success in fundraising and financial management.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to collaborate with and inspire confidence among a wide range of stakeholders.
